Working 900-plus feet above the deep, yawning Colorado River Gorge at Black Canyon, workers are closing the gap between the halves of the huge arch structure that will carry the US 93 roadway deck across the gorge, above and downstream from Hoover Dam on the Nevada-Arizona border, 10/09.

This new arch bridge being built is spanning the deep gorge of the Colorado River, some 900+ feet above the river, just below Hoover Dam. It will allow the Hwy 93 traffic to bypass the dam and the many "S" curves in the road leading to and from it. 10/'09

These fountains are only one attraction for visitors to the new park along Balboa Avenue in Panama City, Panama. The many new buildings going up demonstrate the still-vibrant economy of Panama, and the changing face of the cosmopolitan city as well as the country. What's not to like? People still wonder why I like Panama so much! It's a no-brainer!

This is a view of part of the totally reconstructed and expanded Panama City waterfront along Balboa Avenue, known as Cinta Costera (Coastal Belt). The road through it is a modern 8-lane thoroughfare that eases traffic and makes the new park accessible to everyone. Jogging/bike paths, basketball courts, and five-packs of designated recycling containers demonstrates Panama's modern face.

Here are the cannons henry Morgan fired after he overtook the garrison stationed at this strategic fort on the Caribbean/Atlantic coast of Panama. The Chagres River empties into the ocean in the background. The fort guarded the big river and the natural bay/harbor at its mouth.

These cannons were fired in several fights and attacks at historic Fort San Lorenzo, located on the Caribbean coastline where the Chagres River mouth and natural harbor/bay are situated. The infamous pirate Henry Morgan fought and overtook the garrison at this old fort in the mid to late 1600s, and launched his devastating attack on Old Panama City via the Chagres River in 1671.

These raccoon-like animals are shy. This one stopped to check us out as much as we were checking it out. Note the very long tail. There were about 15 that crossed the road and disappeared back into the dense jungle along the sides of the road just as we came along.

This imposing, beautiful Catholic church was built around 1950. It is located on Via Espana, near El Cangrejo in the capitol city. The twin spires and fascia are lit up during weddings in the evening. The tower bells ring on the hour.

This car is a DAILY DRIVER, not a 'trailer queen' or a 'garage ghost'---never seen by anyone. It get's DRIVEN, pounding the pavement the way it is meant to do! Blue Flame 235 'six popper' sips fuel. Automatic transmission, power top and power steering make this car a joy to drive. They don't make 'em like this any more. Too bad.

This old tree is over 200 years old, likely older than the United States of America. It is a local landmark, and the Texaco gas/diesel filling station next to it is known as "The Tree Station" by the locals.

We crossed the river following these helpful young 'guides'. Earlier flooding had damaged the highway bridge over the river.
